About

Infrastructure for digital evidence.

Most of what matters today happens online — and most of it can be edited, deleted, or disputed by tomorrow. Provena exists so that what happened online can be preserved, examined, and verified by people who were not there — including people who have no reason to trust us.

The thesis

Screenshots ask for trust. Records can be checked.

A screenshot is a claim about what a page said. A Provena record is built differently: captured in a controlled environment, hashed at origin, chained into an auditable custody ledger, anchored to independent references, and open to verification without an account. The discussion moves from trust to verification — which is where evidence belongs.

Principles

How we build.

Verification over trust
Every record is independently verifiable — by a court, an opposing expert, an auditor — with public tools and no account. If checking a claim requires believing us, we have not finished the job.
The record is never the upsell
Chain of custody, external proofs, public verification, and reports are part of every record, in every plan. What makes evidence trustworthy is not sold separately.
Proofs that outlive us
Fingerprints are registered with timestamp authorities and public networks that operate outside Provena. If we disappeared tomorrow, the references would still be there — and still be checkable.
Straight answers — even when the answer is no
We document what the platform proves, what it does not prove, and what depends on external systems. We do not promise admissibility, and we distrust anyone who does.

Read how a record is made.

Our methodology is public: what is preserved, how it is sealed, and the limits we state before anyone asks.
